Review

Directed by David Frankel, and based on the novel by Lauren Wiesbergen, ''The Devil Wears Prada'' stars Anne Hathaway as the protagonist and Meryl Streep as her ruthless boss. This comedy-drama is a moderate entertainment, quite deep, but remains just somewhat satisfactory.

But it does have good elements throughout, with the costumes, makeup, the acting, and perhaps the story. And it doesn't have a boring moment. Instead, it remains enjoyable throughout, but, still... it is just only satisfactory, not excellent.

Andrea ''Andy'' Sachs (Anne Hathaway) is a simple girl, with not a good sense of fashion. She may not be ''skinny or glamorous'' but she is ''smart and learns fast'', as she later describes herself. She goes for interview as the junior personal assistant of Miranda Priestly, the well-known editor-in-chief of the well-known fashion magazine Runway. As we see, Miranda is not quite pleased with her as she is so very simple and has almost no sense for fashion. But she accepts her as the junior assistant, nevertheless. Andrea faces a lot of problems, firstly because of the ruthless nature of her boss, who seems to be too demanding, and secondly because of her lack of taste in fashion. After some problems, with the help of the helpful Nigel, the art director of the magazine, she transforms herself from a simple woman to a stylish young woman with stylish dresses and makeup, and works hard to impress Miranda.

The protagonist of the film is Andy, a sweet young women who has graduated from the Northwestern University. She wishes to be a journalist. But as for now, she is the junior personal assistant of the famous Miranda Priestly. Anne Hathaway's performance is excellent, and we come to feel sympathy for this character.

As the stylish, ruthless, demanding editor-in-chief, Meryl Streep gives a perfect performance. Miranda Priestly is somewhat the antagonist of the film, yet she is not that bad. Yet, she almost always doesn't seem to understand the problems of her employees. It is somewhat a complicated character. When Andy wonders why she took her as a junior assistant, a friend comments that Miranda Priestly is ''unpredictable"!

In a major supporting character, there is the presence of Stanley Tucci, who plays the Art Director of the magazine who is always friendly and helpful and helps Andy whenever he can. There is also the presence of Adrien Grenier as Andy's boyfriend who lives with her, Simon Baker as a well-known magazine writer with whom Andy slowly falls in love with, Emily Blunt as the senior personal assistant of Miranda and a secondary antagonist.

Cinematography is generally excellent, and the background music is generally good. The costumes and makeup are quite good.

From the start of the film, it looks very promising. And as it goes by, it does deliver entertainment, making us enjoy the movie thoroughly. And after it ended, well, I thought, yeah, it is a good movie, indeed. But not something that special.

Overall, David Frankel's ''The Devil Wears Prada'' is an average entertainer, often being sweet. A light comedy-drama, watch this movie, you won't be disappointed!
